Spotlight on Callie Bryant: A Heart That Gives
At 83 years old, Gainesville native Callie Bryant radiates a love for life and people that’s as vibrant as her garden. One of 14 siblings, Callie grew up on a farm surrounded by goats, chickens, and a close-knit family. Callie welcomed me into her home with warmth, and lit up as she spoke about her seven grandchildren, with two more on the way.

“I love people—I give back because I love them,” she said simply. That love shows up in the many ways Callie engages with her community. Twice a week, she works at a daycare, and on her days off, you’ll find her visiting people in nursing homes or hospitals. “Some don’t want visitors, but they usually feel better after a little conversation,” she says. She also gives rides to doctor’s appointments and isn’t discouraged by those who might be grumpy at first, “Not everyone is nice, but they all need love.”
After a health scare earlier in life, Callie felt her purpose become clear: “My purpose is to love others, and let them love me.” It’s a mission she’s followed faithfully. At one point in her life, she and her friends cooked and delivered meals to seniors twice a month. She fondly remembered how excited people were to have visitors and someone to talk to. She laughed and said, “People were happy to have a meal, and I was happy to be told I was a good cook!”
She retired from Tacachale in 2001, Florida’s oldest community for people with developmental disabilities, but never stopped supporting those in need of a little extra care. “I saw the need,” she explains. “I’m a private person, and I do what feels right to me. God created us all, and we are all connected. I see myself in everyone I help.”
Her yard features a beautiful orange tree, kale, fresh herbs, and 3 large pineapple plants. As Callie walked me to my car, she pointed to the mulberry tree across the street, letting me know she had plans on making something delicious. “I love life, and I love people,” Callie said, summing up not just the interview, but her entire approach to living.
Callie was recommended for this Senior Spotlight by Lindy Wilbekin of Innovation Home Health Care, LLC, who recognized Callie’s generous spirit and love for others.
